Tour overview

The Marangu Route is one of the most popular paths to start climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Marangu is often dubbed the "Coca-Cola Route," not only because it is the most popular but also due to its moderate hut accommodations. 40% of climbers who ascend Kilimanjaro use this route, and it is great for budget travelers. The Marangu Route comes full circle as it is a round trip starting from the Marangu Gate, which lies at an altitude of 1860 meters; the route extends to Uhuru Peak, completing around 72 km. This route offers easy access to several ecological zones such as lush montane rainforests teeming with vibrant birds and colobus monkeys, giant moors covered with heathers, alpine deserts, and Arctic frozen landscapes consisting of glaciers and snowfields. Unlike other routes, this one offers dormitory-style huts instead of tents, giving a unique communal experience. Marangu also offers public campsites, which add further convenience. Although the 5-day itinerary is the shortest option available, it is easily the most attractive for those required to work under time constraints. This route still rewards travelers with breathtaking views and dynamic experiences. On this route, along with reduced acclimatization time, the 65-87% success rate is the standard for the 6-day version. Unlike the other routes, the 5-day schedule results in a summit success rate of 50-60%.
